Mishaal Tamer Unplugged: One Rooftop, One Band, Above Al Balad

Pepsi Unplugged put Mishaal Tamer and his band on the roof of the MDLBEAST Radio House during Balad Beast, in front of a small crowd who knew every word.

Some shows work because of the scale. This one worked because of the opposite.

On 31 January 2025, Mishaal Tamer played Pepsi Unplugged on the rooftop of the MDLBEAST Radio House during Balad Beast, in front of a small crowd of his own fans. Him, his band, and the old town of Jeddah underneath. Close enough that every lyric landed.

The rooftop: Bait Farwan, Al Balad

The MDLBEAST Radio House took over Bait Farwan, the historic house at the entrance of Harat Al Mazloum, deep in the old corridors of Al Balad. Historic Jeddah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the building carries that weight. Coral stone, carved wooden shutters, centuries of the city stacked into the walls.

The set happened on the roof of it, open to the night, with the old town spread out below. Sound behaves differently up there. Nothing bounces back at you, so a band has to carry a song on its own.

Putting a show like this in that quarter is not decoration. The place does half the work. No big stage to hide behind, no distance between an artist and the people standing in front of him.

Stripped back, not stripped bare

Mishaal Tamer’s records sit between indie pop and something more urban, built for headphones and for festival crowds. Pepsi Unplugged took those songs off a festival stage and put them on a roof, with the band close enough to touch: guitar, bass, drums and keys, and nothing at all between them and the front row.

That format exposes whether a song holds up when the room is this small. His did. Everything was closer, slower in places, and considerably more personal, and the crowd stayed with it the whole way through.

He came into the night with real momentum. HOME IS CHANGING, his album released in October 2024, was still fresh, and he had already put a Saudi voice on a global stage with “Mirage” alongside OneRepublic for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. This was the opposite of that scale, and that was the point.

His people, up on the roof

This was not a general admission show. It was built for his closest fans, the ones he calls the Chicken Gang, and it felt like it.

They knew the words. They knew when to be quiet. A night like this only becomes memorable when a crowd understands its job, and this one did from the first song.

Hosting were Ninyaz and Rosa from MDLBEAST Radio, keeping the evening moving between songs without ever getting in the way of it.

Why MDLBEAST Radio builds nights like this

The MDLBEAST Radio House exists to put artists and listeners in the same small space, in the city’s oldest quarter, during the biggest week of its cultural calendar.

A festival can give an artist a crowd of thousands. A rooftop in Al Balad gives them a hundred people who already know every word, which is a different kind of achievement and frequently a better night.

Sound check done. Then magic.
